Meeting Minutes – June 10, 2018
The Little Mountain Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. Present for the meeting were Mayor Jana Jayroe, Council Members Charles Shealy, Marty Frick and Melvin Bowers.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Mayor Jayroe. The invocation was given by Council Member Bowers.
Council reviewed the meeting minutes of the May 2018 meeting. A motion was made by Shealy and seconded by Frick to accept the minutes as presented. The motion carried 4-0.
The financial report for May was reviewed by council. A motion to accept the report as information was made by Bowers and seconded by Shealy. The motion carried 4-0.
A motion was made by Frick and seconded by Shealy to open the public hearing for the 2nd reading of the 2018-19 FY General Operating Budget. The motion carried, and the public hearing was opened at 6:34 pm. There was no public present and no comments. The public hearing was closed at 6:35 pm. A motion to accept the budget as presented was made by Bowers and seconded by Shealy. The motion carried 4-0.
Mayor Jayroe received bids for the construction to the library. The amount budgeted for the project is $245. Numerous bids were received ranging from $189,900 to $221,500. Baker &Sons were the low bid at $189, 900. Mayor Jayroe added that the current ac unit is questionable. The unit is new but has never been used in the building. Someone will check out the system before additional plans are made. If the unit is good that would be a potential savings of approximately $8,000. Council agreed they would like to continue to be able to give input as the project moves along.
Mayor Jayroe reported that the ac unit in the Section House was not working properly. Wilson’s is scheduled to check it.
Brent Richardson with the Newberry County Water and Sewer Authority has indicated that he is hopeful that the water tower will be painted by the Reunion.
Mayor Jayroe has contacted NCWSA regarding a sewer line for Main Street businesses. Bent Richardson indicated that the approximate cost would be $7000. Mayor Jayroe said that each business would have to pay the hook up fee. Mayor Jayroe stated that if the project did come to fruition she would abstain from voting since she has a business on Main Street.
Council discussed additional lawn maintenance items needed in town to include adding straw to the Town Center and entrance to Reunion Park. Shrubs and trees need to be cut back at Brady Park, the Town Center and Reunion Park. The town clerk will contact the lawn services provider.
For the Reunion, Council discussed:
- The contract with the amusement rides has been signed.
- South Carolina Electric and Gas will donate trash boxes.
- Council Member Shealy is working on the car show.
- Council Members Shealy and Frick will work on getting the banners and signs up in town before July 4.
- The town clerk will follow up on boxes being mounted outside of town hall for parade applications.
- Frick will check with Newberry County Public Works about repairs to the drive through Reunion Park.
In other business:
- Repairs and improvements continue at Reunion Park.
- No news on the North Church Street feasibility study.
- Council agreed to move forward with the new street light on pole # 672453 on Hwy 202.
- Council was reminded that petitions for election are due by July 13.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 pm. The next meeting will be on July 10.
