SPECIAL MEETING TO DECLARE STATE OF EMERGENCY

The Little Mountain Town Council met in special session on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at the Derrick Community Center.   Present for the meeting were Mayor Jana Jayroe, Council Members Marty Frick, Patrick Bowers and Mary Buntin. The meeting was called to order at 4:00 pm by Mayor Jayroe.

In the early morning hours of September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene caused unprecedented damage to the Town of Little Mountain, the surrounding community and throughout Newberry County and the State of South Carolina.  There is widespread destruction including power outages and damage to property. As a result, the Town of Little Mountain has declared a state of emergency.

At this time, six (6) days following the impact of the storm, areas are beginning to have power restored.  There continues to be property damage that includes many downed trees and debris along roadways.

Damage to facilities at the Town of Little Mountain include extensive damage in Reunion Park and the Rocky Branch Trailhead. As a result, both parks will be closed until further notice.  The Derrick Community Center will reopen beginning the week of October 7, 2024.

To meet the needs of the community, the council reviewed a mutual aid agreement with Newberry County.  Mayor Jayroe explained that this agreement would assist with clearing of debris from the storm.  More details are needed, and Jayroe will provide more information as it becomes available. The town clerk read the ordinance, and a motion was made by Frick and seconded by Bowers to approve the ordinance.  The motion carried unanimously.

Council expressed thanks to the many people working the storm and other volunteers.  Sympathies were also expressed for those that lost their lives during the storm and for the other states affected by Hurricane Helene.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:11 pm.

Respectfully submitted by:

Cindy Farr, TOLM Town Clerk
