Meeting Minutes –June 11, 2024
The Little Mountain Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at the Old Town Hall Building. Present for the meeting were Mayor Jana Jayroe, Council Members, Marty Frick, Patrick Bowers and Mary Buntin. Mayor Jayroe called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm and the invocation was given by Council Member Buntin.
The council reviewed the meeting minutes of May 21, 2024. A motion was made by Frick and seconded by Bowers to accept the minutes as presented. The motion carried 4-0. The minutes
The council reviewed the financial report ending May 2024. A motion to accept the report as information was received by Frick, Buntin second, the motion carried 4-0.
Mayor Jayroe and Council welcomed Roxie Moore to the meeting. Ms. Moore shared a letter to Council from her mother, Roxie K. Derrick. The letter expressed interest from the South Carolina Wildlife Federation to acquire the Rocky Branch Natural Area from the town to establish a Nature and Education Center. After some discussion, Mayor Jayroe commented that she would have to investigate the possibility because of the interest of the Upper Savannah Land Trust. Mayor Jayroe and Council thanked Ms. Moore for the presentation and indicated that they would be in contact with her.
A motion was made by Frick to hold the second reading of the Election Ordinance. The motion was seconded by Bowers and the motion carried.
Frick motioned to hold the second reading of the 2024-25 General Operating Budget. The motion was seconded by Bowers. The motion carried.
The Council reviewed the draft of the 2022-23 audit completed by McKinley, Cooper and Co. The audit report expresses an unmodified opinion on the fair presentation of the financial statements.
In old business:
- The Reunion Planning Meeting will be held on June 19, 2024, at 6:30 pm at the Derrick Center.
- Frick, Buntin and the town clerk met with a representative from Gracia Brothers regarding a bid for pressure washing and painting of columns at the Derrick Center and painting stages at the Reunion Park stage. The town clerk will forward any information regarding the bid to the council.
- The meeting of the Rural Fire Board will be held on June 27 for a vote on the use of the fire siren. Council Member Buntin asked if the Fire Department could work with the business affected by the siren especially on the weekends. Nick Huffstetler, LM Fire Department indicated that if the Board voted to keep the siren, the Fire Department would work on a compromise with the business.
- There have been no further inquiries on the Section House rental. The town clerk will post information again to the website and Mayor Jayroe will post to the Facebook page.
- Council Member Bowers reported that the screens in the concession area at Reunion Park have been repaired for the Reunion. Frick has also removed the water fountain at Rocky Branch. The foundation will be replaced with a freeze proof handle. It was discovered that the water at Rocky Branch is not working. Bowers and Frick will look at this for repair. Frick also commented that he will be checking the ice box prior to the Reunion
- The town clerk contacted the Newberry County Voter Registration and Election Office for an update on the election in November. To date there have been no requests for petitions.
- The wooden ladder-back chairs at Old Town Hall will be available for purchase for $5.00 each. There are five (5) chairs available.
In new business.
- Council approved a reimbursement for $14.28 for library supplies
- The town clerk received a request for the use of Reunion Park as a fundraiser registration area. The park has been requested for Sept. 7 or 14 if raining. The requesting party has stated that they do not need use of the restrooms and would like to use the area at no cost. After some discussion, it was agreed that the requesting party could use the area, however if someone rents the shelter, the renter will have rights to the area.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:00 pm.
