January 2021 Meeting Minutes
The Little Mountain Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the Derrick Community Center at 6:30 pm. Present for the meeting were Mayor Jana Jayroe, Council Members Steve White, and Marty Frick. Also present were newly elected members of council, Laura McLeod and David Bowers as well as members of the community. Notary, Jean Barnes, was present to administer the oath of office.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm and Mayor Jayroe welcomed everyone to the meeting. The oath of office was dispensed to Mayor Jayroe, and Council Members McLeod and Bowers.
Mayor Jayroe welcomed members from the local traveling baseball team, The Lake Murray Strippers, to the meeting. Jayroe shared with the guest some of the background information on the ball field and the partnership with the county recreation department. The team headed by Lance Craft is an official non-profit organization. The organizations’ focus is to teach community service and other character building through the game of baseball. While using the field, the team and coaches have also been helping to keep the field up. Mayor Jayroe thanked the team for their donation of time and work to the town. It was noted that one thing needed at the ball field was another trash can. Additional trash cans are available in the old town hall and can be placed near the ball field. The Newberry County Recreation Department will be scheduling the field beginning in March and continuing through May. The council and team hope to continue working together when possible to meet the needs of the children in the area.
Council recognized Kim Crumpton, and Nannette White who are interested in forming a Christmas Committee to assist with decorating. Council Member McLeod volunteered to also join with the committee. Numerous ideas such as a community Christmas tree lighting and encouraging more of the community and businesses to participate in decorating were discussed. The committee would like to have a power source at the corner of Main and Pomaria Streets for possible lighting. The committee agreed to continue working on ideas and the council voiced their support for the committee.
Council reviewed the meeting minutes of December 2020. A motion to accept the minutes as presented was made by White and seconded by Frick, the motion carried 5-0.
Council reviewed the financial report for December 2020. A motion to accept the report as information was made by White and seconded by Frick. The motion carried 5-0.
In other business:
- Council discussed the status of town facilities during the pandemic. There are still substantial numbers of empty beer cans in the trash at Reunion Park. Council discussed the possibility of placing security cameras at Reunion Park. The security camera was been reset at Rocky Branch.
- School traffic is becoming an issue again. It was noted that traffic was backed up to Highway 76 one day last week. Deputy Abrams is looking at ways to re-route the traffic to clear the highway.
- The sewer line has been dug and construction is now waiting on DHEC permits.
- Council discussed the I26 project. Holy Trinity Church Road is now open. Parr Road remains closed currently. It is expected that Highway 202 will not close or only be closed temporarily since a ne bridge is being constructed.
- The new sidewalks look great. Mayor Jayroe and Council extended thanks to former Council Member Charles Shealy for his work on the sidewalk project.
- The Business Directory Board should be ready to install soon. There has been a lot of interest from businesses so far. Council discussed having a ribbon cutting or unveiling for the board. Council discussed the possibility of lighting for the board.
- The speed monitors have been installed. There will be a training on January 25 for using the website.
- There are several Boy Scouting projects available in town including parking lot striping and staining and sealing benches in park.
- The roof on the town center gazebo needs repair. Frick will look at it and report back to council.
- Council discussed shelving for storage rooms at park. Charles Shealy volunteered to help with project. Council Member Bowers will measure the room, check on prices and report back to council on possible metal shelving from Northern Tool or Costco.
With the continuous rise in COVID19 cases, Council discussed having the February meeting via video conference. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:41 pm.
The next meeting will be held on February 9, 2021 at 6:30 pm.
