Meeting Minutes – April 11, 2023
The Little Mountain Town Council met in regular session on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at the Derrick Community Center beginning with the call to order at 6:30 pm. Present for the meeting were Mayor Jana Jayroe, Council Members Marty Frick, David Bowers, and Steve White. An invocation was given by Council Member Bowers.
Council reviewed minutes of the March 2023 meeting. A motion was made by Frick and seconded by Bowers to approve the minutes as presented. The motion carried 4-0.
The Council examined the financial report ending March 2023. A motion to accept the report as information was made by Frick and seconded by White. The motion carried.
Mayor Jayroe welcomed leaders and members from Girl Scout Troop 1836. Leader, Lindsay Longshore explained that the scouts would like to give back to the community by planting flowers. After some discussion, it was decided that flowers would be planted at the front of the Derrick Community Center. Council Member Bowers agreed to assist by preparing the flower bed for planting. The scouts plan to plant the flowers on April 25. The Council thanked the group for their contribution.
In old business and updates, the following was discussed:
Sewer Connection- The sewer connection is completed. The town clerk will call Metts’ to see if additional dirt can be added to the area due to settling. The town clerk will also contact the water and sewer authority regarding the sewer fee and Brigman’s regarding draining and collapsing the old septic tank.
Website Design- Council Member McLeod was not present for the meeting but did send in an update on the website design. Per the update, the switching and formatting for the servers will be done this weekend. There was a lot of additional work that had to be completed for security and encryption.
Concerns at the LM Post Office – Mayor Jayroe has received name and contact information to address concerns about the post office. She will continue to follow up.
Property Damage to Town Message Board- The town has received three thousand dollars ($3000) from the SC Municipal Insurance Fund for the loss to the sign. The SC Municipal Fund also included a letter to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office to request restitution from the responsible party in the amount of $10,546.86. The Council reviewed the estimates for a new board and repair of the board. After some discussion, Frick made a motion to repair the existing board without the new copy track in the amount of $2902.64. Frick indicated that he would look at the track for possible replacement. The motion was seconded by White and carried 4-0.
Unused Appliances at Derrick Center – The washer and dryer at the Derrick Center is unused and space in the kitchen is needed for storage. Council Member Frick offered to pay $200 for the appliances. A motion to accept the payment from Frick was made by Bowers and seconded by White. The motion carried 3-0. Frick will take care of removing the appliances.
Reunion Planning – The Reunion Committee will meet on April 13 at 6:30 pm to continue planning for the event.
Ribbon Cutting at LOL Studio- The ribbon cutting for LOL Studio was held on April 1. The event was well attended.
In new business:
Council reviewed the worksheet for the 23-24 operating budget. The first reading of the budget will be held at the May meeting and a public hearing will be held in June.
Grace Lathrop, Called Creative Studio, has asked about parking on Pomaria Street in front of her shop. After some discussion, it was agreed that parallel parking within the highway right of way on Pomaria Street was appropriate. The town clerk will follow up with Ms. Lathrop.
The town clerk has a meeting with a representative from Wells Sanitation on April 19 to discuss trash pick-up services.
Leah Bush, Library Manager, will participate in the LME Community Walk on April 21. Children from LME will be visiting the Derrrick Center Library.
Mayor Jayroe will be completing the federal report due on April 30 for the American Rescue Plan funds.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:25 pm.
